For a Singer and a Sect: A Rift Amid the Riffs?
OVER the last three years, the most visible adherent of the Chabad-Lubavitch sect of Hasidic Judaism has been a strapping 20-something reggae singing star named Matisyahu.
After joining the sect around 2001, Matisyahu became a regular guest and performer at Chabad’s outposts around the world. In songs and interviews, he frequently mentioned Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the movement’s revered spiritual leader. “Youth,” the title track of his second studio album, quotes Rabbi Schneerson’s dictum that “youth is the engine of the world.”

No Doubt's Adrian Young has said that the band's new album will be influenced by reggae music. However, Young also revealed that it is unlikely that the group's comeback LP will be released until 2010. Levi Roots Introduces Reggae Sauce To Britain...
Reggae sauce creator Levi Roots was in Liverpool last night to offer tips on being an entrepreneur. Mr Roots’s is a reggae musician, chef and entrepreneur currently residing in Brixton, South London.
He has performed with James Brown and Maxi Priest and was nominated for a MOBO award in 1998[1]. He was a close friend of Bob Marley when he resided in the UK and performed "Happy Birthday Mr. President" for Nelson Mandela in 1992 on his trip to Brixton. He gained widespread fame after appearing on the UK television programme Dragons' Den looking for funding for his "Reggae Reggae Sauce".
The brand’s flagship product is a jerk barbecue sauce made to his grandmother's "secret recipe". Roots and his family have been using the sauce in their food stall at the annual Notting Hill Carnival since 1991. “My kids said for me not to go on Dragons’ Den,” he said. “They said no Rasta with four-foot dreadlocks is going to go on the BBC and be a dragon slayer – but my mum told me to go on.” Shortly after his appearance on the programme, Sainsbury's announced that they would be stocking the sauce in 600 of their stores. “In 2006, I had the idea it was time to do my sauce and come out of my comfort zone,” he said.
To coincide with the release of his recipe book "Reggae Reggae Cookbook", Roots appeared on the June 3, 2008 edition of BBC's Ready Steady Cook as a celebrity. He achieved the second prize against Lesley Waters. High Street sandwich chain Subway began selling Reggae Chicken Sub in its UK outlets, having signed a deal with Roots, enabling it to use his spicy sauce brand in its sandwiches.

Legendary bandleader Byron Lee lost his battle with cancer yesterday. The soca icon died at the University Hospital of the West Indies at the age of 73.
Lee, fondly referred to as 'The Dragon', had been fighting transitional cell cancer and was being treated in Miami, Florida. He was later diagnosed with bladder cancer two years ago and returned to Jamaica, by air ambulance, on Saturday, October 25, and was being treated at The Tony Thwaites Wing.
"The family of The Honourable Byron Lee Sr, OJ, regretfully confirms that he passed away peacefully today," The Dragon's daughter, Julian Lee Samuels, told The Gleaner. "He fought a very brave battle with cancer and was in hospital surrounded by his family and close friends. He will be remembered not only as an excellent musician, but as a very kind, generous, humble and talented man who was always working to use music to unite persons of all ages, races and people from all walks of life."
